Good to know

Frequently asked questions

What is Bologna best known for?

Bologna combines UNESCO-listed porticoes, a medieval university quarter and an unusually strong food culture. The most bookable experiences are walking and food tours, pasta classes and trips into the Motor Valley or Food Valley.

Are the Two Towers open?

The Asinelli Tower is currently closed for maintenance. Do not book a tour on the assumption that it includes the climb; check the current itinerary and Bologna Welcome before paying.

How far are Florence, Modena and Ravenna?

Official local information gives about 37 minutes by high-speed train to Florence. Modena is roughly 20–30 minutes by train and Ravenna around an hour by regional train, before local transfers.

Does Bologna have a beach or harbour?

No sea beach and no tourist harbour. Bologna lies inland, with hills and the Apennines to the south. The Adriatic coast is a separate trip towards Ravenna or Rimini.

Do I need a car in Bologna?

Not for the historic centre: it is compact, walkable and partly traffic-restricted. A car can help for scattered producers and hill destinations, but many major cities are easier by train.
